The God Delusion

Before reading this book, I would have considered myself agnostic, and before that a very religious-minded Christian. I had been having substantial doubts through my first year of college, yet couldn't quite make the immense jump to an atheistic world view just yet. This book was the perfect kick-start.

I believe Dawkins couldn't have possibly done a better job with one particular aspect of the book: its sequence. By beginning the book with a review of the respect that religion gets but doesn't deserve, he sets up the religious reader for the required religious skepticism that is needed to continue on unhindered with the book.

The Portable Atheist: Essential Readings for the Nonbeliever

I would like to know who told Hitchens that, when compiling a collection of writings about a belief, he should only include positive articles and nothing that contradicts the view. In his own book, god is Not Great, he states, "Some of these excursions to the bookshelf or the lunch or the gallery [undergone by atheists] will obviously, if they are serious, bring us into contract with belief and believers, from the great devotional painters and composers to the works of Augustine, Acquinas, Maimonides, and Newman.

Peter Hitchens's The Rage Against God is a fascinating account of the world I grew up in--the postwar period in England when the old confidence in traditional authority, imperial power, morals and customs started to fall apart. I am a few years older than Hitchens and when I was at public (private) school, the old ways and beliefs seemed still strong. It was only a few of the more intellectual boys (like me) who were openly atheist. By his time, it seems the old confidence and authority of our elders and teachers was in steeper decline.

The Necessity of Atheism

This was a great read. It was much easier to understand than Nietzsche's works, but the message was still just as deep.
I've seen with my own eyes how religion can hold people back, so I completely understand the need to throw off its chains.
This book was full of great ideas and excellent arguments. I would recommend it to anyone, especially my uber-religious family who could really benefit from it. I thought it was very well written and convincing. It's a wonderful blueprint for building a better world.
